At least once a week Dolores has “Movie Night” for some
of the local niño’s. This normally consist of a new selection from our large and growing movie DVD collection; however, they seem to want to view at least
each of their favorites 2-3 times before we can coax them to move to a new
movie. Included in the “package” are
hotdogs and papas (potato chips), always slathered in as much catsup as we will allow, and refresca
(which occasionally is aqua only). Yes
you gourmands, even the papas are layered with the red stuff. One or two, with more refined taste, will add
mustard. On a different night they will
want hamburgers as long as we don´t add any of the traditional condiments
i.e., lettuce, onions, pickles, tomatoes – you name it. Yes, only the catsup and occasional mustard
specialist. The average maximum
consumption is 3 each, once in awhile a 2, and for the 4+ year old just one.
The 4 year old quickly tires of the movie and joins Dolores in her office to play with his collection of “Zoom, Zooms” (toy cars and trucks) we´ve bought to entertain him on his visits. When he tires of that I find him setting on my lap in my office attempting to disrupt what I´m doing on the computer. The other night, in a moment of inattention, he was able to rearrange my desktop to the point where I spent a minimum of 30 minutes to restore it back to a recognizable state.
The events are always full of talk, interplay, many trips in and out of the baños, head wrestling, arm punching, etc. On the replay evenings the movie serves as a backdrop to a 1 ½ hours social event so there is a high level of energy, whereas, during a new movie it becomes so quite that I will go to the semi-dark living room to see if the movie is over. The focus of the niño’s is so intense that the question, ¿Ha terminado la película? (Is the movie finished?) almost scares them.
Tonight was such a night.
