After
living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for over a decade we´ve found one of the
basic requirements for enjoying our
new lifestyle is a high level tolerance for ambient noises (or a loss of
hearing that can be adjusted with a hearing aid). I was raised as a city boy who also spent
many summers visiting on my grandfather’s farm with the result that the city
artificial noises from automobiles, motorcycles, airplanes, pets, neighbors,
and “what-have-you” and, country noises from farm and wild animals allowed me to
fine-tune my tolerance for background noise – a type of “selective
hearing”.
However,
I can already see that CY2013 is going to be a unique challenge. We live next to a “greenbelt” which is the
home of Andale’s burro “Bernardo” (currently subbing for his kidnapped partner
“Andale” of Andale restaurant) who is a real “talker” – 24/7. Adding five roosters, an uncounted number of
hens, four resident chakalaka´s, several amorous horny pigeons, and some dogs,
we have the basic choir for native background noise. Then to
complete the normal “orchestra” ensemble
of four proportionate groups, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings, we have two condo construction sites, The
Pinnacle (advanced stage of completion) and Mexico Joes Project (initial stage
of happening). Occasionally we can add the
vocals of local favorite Kim Kusma´s practice with her band (two doors away),
the activities of the new (and only) local restaurant located immediately next
door , Jorge’s Hideaway. There is no
real conductor, just various “triggers” – an ambulance, police, or Bombero´s
siren, local fireworks, miscellaneous car alarms, the gas truck announcement ..”GAASSS!
pre-ceded by the recorded bugling of “call to post”, water vendors whistle, and
so on…
I´m
considering recording a CD of all this excitement to be named “Ten Soothing/Significant
Calle Pilitas Wakeup Calls.” Any
investors?
Huh!
