I’ve just returned to the computer after visiting with a new and very entertaining “friend.” We met his acquaintance several months ago while relaxing on the veranda that joins our master bedroom and living room together. His name is “Pancho” and he is a Great-Tailed male Grackle. While there are many of these birds around, this particular one has seemed to adopt us – or he’s quicker than the others to recognize that for a small bit of “singing and dancing” he will be rewarded with some gringo food.

Dolores and I can almost set our watches to his initial dally visit at 9:45 AM. His perch is on the corner of our swimming pool wall just 6 feet away from our veranda. He announces his arrival with a loud series of “clacks” then will puff out his feathers and dance and spin uttering an amazing variety of piercing shrills and whistles until we appear. Then he will perform his routine over and over until its time to reward him with bread crumbs, crackers, and cookies. At first we tossed the offerings from the veranda; however, he has quickly learned to join us on the veranda and accept the food deposited close by on our settee. On one visit I left Dolores with him and returned to installing some shelves in the pantry at the rear of the condo. Dolores relayed that as I began drilling the cement wall he listened closely to the shrill sound emanating from the drill then proceeded to imitate the sound. They are very much like mocking birds with the ability to imitate a large variety of sounds. So goes my day – how is your day?...
